Frequently Asked Questions
- What is an OEM Product
An OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) is an imaging supply produced by the same company that makes your printer.
- What is the difference between item numbers that end with an “A” versus item numbers that end with “X”?
The “A” and the “X” at the end of the item number represent the yield, which is the amount of pages the cartridge is capable of printing. The “A” stands for standard yield and the “X” stands for high yield.
- What is a MICR toner?
A MICR toner (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) is designed for printing magnetic information on the bottom of cheques to be read when the cheque is processed.
- Can I use a compatible print cartridge if my machine is still under warranty?
YES. It is illegal for your laser printer manufacturer to require you to use or purchase a particular brand of cartridge. An Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) cannot void your warranty simply because you exercise your right to choose your preferred brand of supplies (compatibles). To enforce such a policy is in direct violation of the Sherman & Clayton Acts.

Cartridge Buying Tips
- Printer cartridges can be divided into various types: OEM cartridges, re manufactured cartridges, 100% compatible cartridges , or just simply refilled cartridges. Prices usually vary depending on where or how the cartridge is manufactured. It would be in the consumers best interest to locate a local supplier that could supply 100% compatible cartridges, as well as offering bulk pricing. Also purchasing local would eliminate the shipping cost. 100% compatibles are usually manufactured by an after market facility that has high quality control standards as well as being ISO Compliant. Usually a reputable retailer will always purchase from the same quality manufacturer with these Q.C. standards to keep the defect rate at a minimum and an even consistency of quality.
- Price comparing is fairly simple. In general, OEM cartridges are the most expensive. Although genuine OEM cartridges are usually easy to locate in any office supply chain, it is often largely inflated. Due to keen competition and sharp drop in printer price, most printer manufacturers mark up the price of OEM cartridges dramatically to compensate for the loss of profit. In comparison, 100% compatible cartridges are reasonably priced.
- Product quality of OEM cartridges are generally considered as the highest quality cartridges. That is simply not true. In fact, there are third party manufacturers that produce cartridges in ISO 9001 facilities following the same specifications of OEM cartridges. The end result is a laser cartridge that will meet or exceed the OEM cartridge.
- Yield of printer cartridges would be another factor to consider. Comparing the quantity and the print output of toner cartridges can give you a better idea whether you are truly are getting the right cartridge at a considerable low price.
- Prompt delivery would be another factor. Compare the shipping policy of individual local suppliers. Purchasing from a local supplier would be the most cost effective. How long does it take for them to ship out your order? Do they provide free shipping?

Drivers & Downloads
A printer driver is a specialized type of software that converts the image, document or web page you want to print to something that the printer understands. Printer drivers are most often tailored for specific printer series/models with different versions depending on the operating system for the computer the printer is connected to.
Remember that many computer problems are related to faults in installed drivers. As a safety precaution, always download your printer driver directly from the printer driver maker and not from printer driver directories.
